New Guidelines for Small Steps Grant Applications

Due to our limited resources it has been necessary for our organization to change our grant application guidelines for 2019. We have decreased our total household income maximum to $100,000. We will no longer be able to accept applications with total household incomes over this amount. In addition, we will no longer be able to accept applications for children who have previously been awarded AND utilized a Small Steps grant.

Meet Jake Green, Recipient of the 2018 Marc Small Spirit Award!

Congratulations to SFC Jake Green, the winner of the 2018 Marc Small Spirit Award! Jake and Marc served together from 2004-2009 in the U.S. Army.

“I met Marc in 2004 when both he and I, at the ages of 25 and 26, joined the Army.  We instantly became friends and over the course of a few months of training we became best friends.  I graduated in 2006 and went to the 7th Special Forces Group while Marc finished his medical course training.  We spent almost every night together – talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

After Marc’s passing I was deployed to his Firebase in Afghanistan. During that deployment my ankle was injured during combat, but I refused to leave my team to return to the U.S. for treatment.  I sustained injuries during three subsequent deployments to Afghanistan and each time I chose to stay to honor my commitment to my teammates and my country. I unknowingly sacrificed my leg which has had an everlasting impact on me and my family (wife, Kelly and sons, Marc, Ethan and Aaron). Multiple surgeries between 2009 and 2017 to salvage my leg were not successful. Due to the severity of my injuries, my leg was amputated at the knee in 2017.

The past few years have been some of the best of times as well as the worst of times for my family, as we have had to deal with the amputation of my right leg and make adjustments to live a normal life.  My family and I have been fortunate to be able to help other veterans through Operation Surf and Special OPs Survivors.  As an ambassador for Operation Surf, I have been able to see […]

BETTER SPEECH AND HEARING MONTH!

May is our favorite month of the year at Small Steps in Speech because it is Better Speech and Hearing Month!!!  This is the month to raise awareness for those with communication disorders while helping these children with treatment/therapy.  May also brings Memorial Day at which time we honor SSG Marc Small, who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.  Marc’s memory is kept alive by the many people who support our organization and also by the hundreds of children whose lives have been impacted by Small Steps in Speech.
