NJSHA Conference 2011

On Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29, SSIS hosted a booth at the New Jersey Speech and Hearing Association convention.  It was a wonderful opportunity to interact with close to 200 speech and language professionals, as well as representatives from other organizations that serve this community.  We were thrilled to debut our new poster, brochure and inaugural newsletter, all of which helped  tell our story in a professional, yet very personal way.  The response was heartwarming and we hope very much to enjoy new donors, applicants and partners as we continue to serve children with speech and language disorders.

ASHA Conference

Small Steps in Speech was honored to have a booth at the ASHA (American Speech & Hearing Association) Conference this year! It was great that the convention was close to home for the members of the board, being in the city of Brotherly Love. Over the course of three days, we met parents, professionals within the field, and many companies interested in our mission to serving children with communication disorders. It was an overall success for Small Steps in Speech!

The song, “Speak to Me,” was written by one of ASHA’s staff members, IS Director Mike Guerrieri. Mike was inspired to write this song primarily because of his mother and her struggles with a communications disorder.Mrs. Guerrieri’s voice was impacted by the result of a stroke, and later, she suffered from further weakening of her voice and swallowing caused by Multiple Systems Atrophy. Mike says, “As this horrible disease progressed, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to speak with her for much longer, so I cherished the opportunities I had.”
