A lasting legacy: From charity to world travel to NYC marathon, fiancée honors fallen SSG’s memory. ArmyTimes

They had simple plans, and grand ones.

Staff Sgt. Marc Small would return from Afghanistan, where he served with 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), and marry his fiancée, Amanda Charney. He’d hit the books and become a physician assistant. She’d run a home-based speech and language pathology practice for children — Small Steps in Speech would be a good name, he figured. They’d start a family outside of Philadelphia.

They would run at least one marathon. They would visit every continent.

Plans changed Feb. 12, 2009, three weeks into Small’s deployment, when the Special Forces medic died in Faramuz after insurgents attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenades.

In a fog of grief so thick she still doesn’t remember many details, Charney set about preparing for Small’s funeral. That included creating a charity organization to accept donations in Small’s memory.

Small Steps in Speech would be a good name, she figured.

Friends offered comfort by designing logos and putting paperwork together.

“After I lost Marc … I think I was a walking zombie,” Charney said in a Nov. 7 interview. “I’m glad that my job even kept me. I don’t know how it happened so quickly — before we even had his funeral … within days, we already had fliers.

Remembering Our Hero, SSG Marc Small

On this Memorial Day we look to the words of President John F. Kennedy: “A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it remembers, the men it honors.” As Americans, may we forever commit to revealing our nation as one that holds true the memory and full measure of sacrifice our nation’s heroic men and women have given to secure life, liberty, and freedom for us all.

Please join us in remembering our hero, SSG Marc Small. Our mission at SSIS is to assist children with speech and language disorders by funding supplemental therapies and treatments for individuals as well as grants to charitable organizations who serve children with communicative disorders. Our goal is to give children the chance to better express themselves in the world in which we live. Today we remember Marc and his selfless love of our country. Because of his sacrifice we are able to help children in the United States who need a voice. As a tangible memorial to Marc’s selfless heroism, you too can be a hero to a child with a speech and language disorder by making a donation to Small Steps in Speech (www.smallstepsinspeech.org).

SSIS receives the 2014 Distinguished Honor Award!

On May 1, 2014, Amanda Charney represented Small Steps in Speech at the 2014 New Jersey’s Speech & Hearing Associations (www.NJSHA.org) annual Convention in Long Branch, NJ. This award recognized the exemplary work and commitment to the profession of those with communication disorders. We would like to thank Sue Goldman for the nomination, Amy Hadley, and the rest of the board/committee who chose Small Steps in Speech for this honor. We are so very honored and touched that Amanda’s home state of New Jersey acknowledges how this foundation is touching hundreds of children’s lives throughout not only New Jersey, but the country.
