Meet Jake Green, Recipient of the 2018 Marc Small Spirit Award!

Congratulations to SFC Jake Green, the winner of the 2018 Marc Small Spirit Award! Jake and Marc served together from 2004-2009 in the U.S. Army.

“I met Marc in 2004 when both he and I, at the ages of 25 and 26, joined the Army.  We instantly became friends and over the course of a few months of training we became best friends.  I graduated in 2006 and went to the 7th Special Forces Group while Marc finished his medical course training.  We spent almost every night together – talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

After Marc’s passing I was deployed to his Firebase in Afghanistan. During that deployment my ankle was injured during combat, but I refused to leave my team to return to the U.S. for treatment.  I sustained injuries during three subsequent deployments to Afghanistan and each time I chose to stay to honor my commitment to my teammates and my country. I unknowingly sacrificed my leg which has had an everlasting impact on me and my family (wife, Kelly and sons, Marc, Ethan and Aaron). Multiple surgeries between 2009 and 2017 to salvage my leg were not successful. Due to the severity of my injuries, my leg was amputated at the knee in 2017.

The past few years have been some of the best of times as well as the worst of times for my family, as we have had to deal with the amputation of my right leg and make adjustments to live a normal life.  My family and I have been fortunate to be able to help other veterans through Operation Surf and Special OPs Survivors.  As an ambassador for Operation Surf, I have been able to see […]

Lower Providence Township Declares Marc Small Day

The Board of Supervisors  of Lower Providence Township, PA have issued a proclamation declaring August 4, 2018 “Marc Small Day” to honor the sacrifice and legacy of Staff Sgt. Marc Small, a Lower Providence Township resident who was killed in action in Afghanistan. The date marks the tenth and final “On Your Marc” 5k Run/Walk event that is held in his memory and this year falls on Marc’s birthday.

We at Small Steps in Speech are humbled by this very special tribute and we are delighted to honor Marc’s life and share his story with the community on August 4th.
